How to Get a Driving License in PEI
You must adhere to the Graduated Driving Licensing (GDL) system before you may obtain a full PEI driver’s license as a novice. When you finish the course, this method enables you to get an introductory Class 5 driver’s license. The duration of these programs is three years. It can, however, be shortened by a few days or months if you satisfy specific requirements.
Stages of the GDL
Stage 1: L
After receiving your instruction driver’s permit, you should enrol in stage 1 of the GDL program. Before taking a driving test, you must wait at least 365 days after entering this level. After the road test, you will be qualified to obtain a Class 5 PEI driver’s license. You must have a Class 5 license to proceed to Stage 2. You also need an identification decal to drive with your Instruction Driver’s Permit. When driving, this decal must be visible just above the Motor Vehicle Inspection sticker on the lower right side of the windshield. The sticker is a bold yellow decal with a big black “L” in the middle.
Restrictions
- Driving under a manager who has at least four years of driving experience.
- Anytime you drive, a driving supervisor must be present.
- Only permitted to drive with a driving supervisor and a member of one’s close family.
- Driving supervisors with a blood alcohol level of 0.5 or more are prohibited from driving.
- You can only operate a vehicle when your blood alcohol content (BAC) is zero.
- Cannot operate a vehicle with more passengers than the seats can accommodate.
- Cell phones and other portable electronics are not permitted while driving.
- Driving is prohibited from 1 a.m. until 5 a.m.
Stage 2:G
After passing the driving test, you will receive your Class 5 driver’s license. Also, you must obtain a new identification decal and wear it. Moreover, this phase lasts 365 days.
Restrictions
- Only one non-family passenger should be in the car.
- Up to a certain number of seat belts are allowed.
- Driving while having alcohol in the blood is prohibited.
- You cannot use a hand-held gadget or cell phone when driving.
- From 1 a.m. until 5 a.m., driving is prohibited. If you have to drive during this period, you must have a licensed driver with you who has had their license for at least five years and doesn’t have a blood alcohol level of 0.5 or more. (You can seek an exception for work purposes only).
Stage 3
It takes 365 days to complete earning your PEI driver’s license. You still need to put your distinctive “G” decal on the windshield of your driving car to go to this step.
Restrictions
- More passengers than the seat belts in the automobile are not permitted.
- Never use a hand-held device like a cell phone while driving.
- Driving while intoxicated is prohibited.
PEI drivers license Learners (class 7)
You must have been at least 16 years old to be eligible to apply for a Class 7 PEI driver’s license. It’s also referred to as a learner’s permit. Obtaining this entails:
- Display all required documentation.
- Pay the necessary fee.
- pass both the written and visual tests
Documents
- Birth certificate
- Immigration papers
- Passport
Two forms of acceptable resident documentation with your PEI address include
- current utility bills, including phone, cable, and power
- a legal lease or rental contract
- a letter of employment with your name and address on company letterhead or a pay stub
- mail from the federal or provincial governments,
- bank records displaying the name and address, i.e., Underage drivers must have parental or legal guardian approval.
