Types of Driving License
Class 7 driver’s license
Every intended driver must begin here. To apply, you must be 16 years old. There are several limitations to the learner’s permit. For instance, you’ll need a driver of at least 21 to drive with you. That driver must have a Class 5 license and be experienced. You must know all Nunavut traffic laws and signage to apply for this license. You then take the Nunavut Learners license examination. In Nunavut, obtaining a Class 7 license requires passing the exam. You are advised to take free online practice exams while studying your Nunavut driver’s handbook. You can then gauge how well you will perform on the test. You can apply for the class 5 driver’s license after receiving your learner’s permit and accruing additional training hours.
Restrictions
- Driving when supervised – You must always be with a class 5 authorized driver, who must also occupy the driver’s seat.
- Alcohol-free – Your blood alcohol level must always be zero.
- Using seat belts is required for all of your passengers. Only the seats in your car with available seat belts may be occupied.
- Driving at night is prohibited with a class 7 license from midnight until five in the morning.
- 8 Demerit Point Suspension: If you receive up to 8 demerit points, your Class 7 license will be suspended entirely.
- Getting as much actual driving experience as you can is the goal of this license. Therefore whenever feasible, get on the road (together with your boss) and extend the amount of time you spend driving.
Eligible to apply for a class 7 license
- be a Nunavut resident,
- a minimum age of 15 (minors under 18 must have parental or guardian authorization);
- passing the written exam of knowledge,
- meet minimum visual requirements, and
- Provide appropriate identification (e.g., health care card, birth certificate, passport, etc.)
Class 5 license
With this license, you can drive unrestrictedly and independently. You have must first obtain a learner’s permit and pass the class 5 exam to get a class 5 license.
How to apply for a class 7 or learner’s license in Nunavut?
Documents required
- Primary identity consists of two documents provided by the government (with one showing your date of birth).
- A secondary ID that demonstrates your domicile, such as citizenship, residency, or resident status, etc. (A paper containing your address from your work contract or evidence of residency, for example.)
