Stages of Nova Scotia Drivers License

Lerner’s license

Obtaining a learner’s permit is the first step in getting a full driver’s license in Nova Scotia. You must be 16 years old to apply for a learner’s permit. Any candidate under 18 must, however, have parental or guardian approval. Also, this consent needs to be in writing. You will also take a written knowledge test, a vision test, and everything else. Multiple-choice questions make up this test on traffic laws and safe driving practices. Along with following the law and driving safely, your knowledge of the Nova Scotia roadways will also be tested. If you have successfully finished an approved driver education program, you can hold the learner’s permit for a minimum of 9 months even though you can hold the learner’s license for a minimum of 1 year.

Restrictions
  • You must have a supervised driver not registered for a GDL program when you drive.
  • When driving, have no alcohol or drugs in your system.
  • Never use a handheld gadget while driving.

Newly licensed driver

You can move on to the Newly Licensed Driver phase after having a learner’s permit for 12 months. Nevertheless, you must have had a learner’s license for 12 months to be eligible for this stage. If you complete an approved driver education course, it will be shortened to nine months.

Restrictions
  • Driving without any alcohol or drugs in your system
  • Any handheld gadgets must not be used while driving.
  • can only have one front-seat passenger when driving
  • Drive using only the amount of seatbelts provided for the back passengers.
  • A trainee driver needs a supervising driver.
  • Only drive between midnight and five in the morning if exempted by an employer’s nighttime curfew or accompanied by a supervising driver.

Restricted individual

The Restricted Individual Stage is the third phase of obtaining a driver’s license in Nova Scotia. You must successfully finish a six-hour driving course to be eligible. You can enrol in a certified driver training program to avoid taking a driving school. This driver education program must have 25 hours of theory and 10 hours of driving. In addition, you must spend two years in the limited individual stage. After two years, the GDL system’s limitations are finally lifted. As a result, you graduate as a skilled driver.

  • Driving is only possible with handheld gadgets.
  • You are not allowed to drive under another driver’s supervision.
