Written Road tests and Vision
Before earning your driver’s License in Newfoundland, you must pass these three exams. The NL Road Users Handbook is the only item you need to study afterwards.
Written test:
Your understanding of traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving techniques will be tested on this exam. You must earn or above the 85% threshold to pass.
Create an account on MyGovNL to register. You’ll need either your email and MCP or a picture ID from Motor Registration.
Vision test:
If you pass the exam, your Learner’s permit (temporary license) will be mailed to you. You must pass this exam to drive.
When you’re at work, you’ll:

- Bring the required identification with you. (Age, identity, and legal presence in Canada documentation.
- If you are younger than 19, obtain your parent or guardian’s permission.
You can arrange a road test if you’ve used your novice driver’s license (class 5I) for 12 months without an incident. Your road test might be scheduled in eight months if you have completed an accredited driving training program.
Road test:
Schedule a road test appointment before your time of rookie instruction is through. To avoid delays, you must pay 24 hours before your work. Your license can be cancelled due to delays.
On test day:
Make an effort to arrive at least 15 minutes early. Bring the following documents with you as well:
- Your class 5I driver’s License (current learner permit),
- a valid insurance policy,
- the receipt for the road test fee,
- and the registration for the car.
