Apply for a driver’s license

Applying for a driver’s License in Newfoundland and Labrador is simple. There are only three steps needed.

Obtain and study the NL road users handbook.
  • Use MyGovNL to register for your Learner’s permit. If you still need to get one, remember to make one. You’ll need either your email and MCP or a picture ID from Motor Registration.
  • Your Class 5 license will be sent to you automatically once you pass the Learner’s permit stage.
  • Contact the licensing office if you want assistance reading or writing your test. The button to schedule an appointment is at the bottom of the page.
  • You can take your road test after a year. You can take the road test eight months after finishing a recognized driving education course. You must have one other licensed driver with four years of driving experience in the car with you throughout those twelve months. You may only have one additional passenger in the vehicle.

Eligibility applying for a driving license:

To be eligible, you must:
  • Age 16 or older,
  • At the time of application, be physically present in NL,
  • provide a document proving your age (official government birth certificate or passport),
  • Display a different form of identification bearing your name and date of birth (SIN card or MCP).
  • Please keep in mind that every piece of paperwork needs to be authentic. When properly attested, photocopies are accepted.
